What Does Independence Mean?

There is something special about July in Colorado.
The mountains are lush and green. Evenings seem to last forever. Families gather for backyard barbecues, concerts in the park, camping trips, and fireworks that light up our beautiful summer skies.
This year, those celebrations feel even more meaningful as our nation marks its 250th anniversary. It's remarkable to think about the generations of people who have built lives, raised families, overcome hardships, and created opportunities because they believed in the promise of freedom.
It made me stop and think about what independence means today. Not in a political sense, but in a personal one.
As we grow older, most of us become more comfortable in our own skin. We spend less time worrying about what everyone else thinks and more time embracing the people we've become. We begin choosing experiences, relationships, and possessions that truly reflect who we are; not simply what is expected of us.
That's a kind of freedom too.
It's something we have the privilege of witnessing almost every day here at Thollot & Co. Sometimes it's a woman celebrating a career milestone with a piece she'll treasure for decades.
Sometimes it's someone who has inherited jewelry from a loved one and wants to preserve the memories while creating something that better reflects their own style.
Sometimes it's a couple who decides they don't want a ring that looks like everyone else's. They want to create something together—something that could never belong to anyone else.
Those are some of my favorite conversations because they aren't really about jewelry. They're about people. They're about stories.
They're about celebrating the moments that shape our lives.
I've always believed that the jewelry we treasure most isn't necessarily the most expensive piece we own. It's the piece that reminds us of something important. A new beginning. A hard-earned accomplishment. A loved one we'll never forget. A dream that finally became reality.
Jewelry becomes part of our story.
That's one of the reasons custom design has always been so close to our hearts.
Every custom piece begins with a conversation. Sometimes it starts with a diamond or a gemstone. Sometimes with an heirloom tucked away in a jewelry box. Sometimes with nothing more than an idea and a dream.
From there, we create something that has never existed before—a piece designed around one person's life, style, and story. There is something incredibly rewarding about helping someone create jewelry that feels completely authentic to them.
That same philosophy inspired us to create our own Colorado Cut™ Diamond.
Colorado has a way of leaving its mark on the people who love it. It's found in the adventures we share, the memories we make, and especially in those unforgettable evenings when the sky fills with colors that seem almost impossible. The fire of our Colorado sunsets. The fire of your passion. Captured in the cut of your diamond.
That idea became the inspiration behind our Colorado Cut™ Diamond.
It's more than a beautiful diamond. It's our way of capturing the spirit of Colorado in something that can be worn and treasured for a lifetime. Whether it becomes the center of an engagement ring or commemorates another meaningful chapter, it carries with it a connection to this incredible place we are so fortunate to call home.
That's what I love most about what we do.
Yes, we create beautiful jewelry. But more importantly, we get to celebrate people's lives alongside them. We celebrate engagements and anniversaries. Graduations and retirements. New babies. Fresh starts. Family legacies. Personal victories.
Sometimes the occasion is one the whole world celebrates. Sometimes it's meaningful to only one person. Both deserve to be remembered.
As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary this summer, I hope you'll also take a moment to celebrate your own journey.
Reflect on where you've been. Appreciate how far you've come. Celebrate the people, places, and experiences that have shaped your story.
And if one day you choose to commemorate that journey with a piece of jewelry, I hope it is something as unique as the life you've lived.
Because the most meaningful jewelry isn't simply beautiful. It's personal.
It's authentic.
It's unmistakably yours.
